The secret of natural dyeing is out. Well, technically it has been around since 2600 BC China, where the fathers of printmaking dyed textiles for royals. Everywhere I look, companies are tapping into the sustainable approach. Last summer, I dove into the realm of pre-reduced indigo, and now I am expanding my breadth of knowledge with organic vegetables. I am currently working on a project for In Season of Teton Valley, Idaho, and their Kickstarter campaign to build their new horse trailer - converted pizza truck. We experimented with beets (shown below), onion skins, turmeric, and cabbage to dye swatches for handmade beeswax wraps. For this natural muslin fabric, beets and turmeric proved to hold the strongest tones. This project has sparked an interest in exploration of natural dyes, and I am excited where it takes the Stryker brand! Keep your eyes peeled for new dye batches. Yay!
